The Journey Begins[]
The game begins with the player filling out a form to Professor Cedar of the Rieva region. This particular form is an application to become one of her assistants in Pokémon research. Upon filling this out, the screen fades to the player character in bed as the family pet, a Welshire wakes them up. The player gets dressed and goes downstairs to meet their mother, who tells the player that their application has been accepted by Professor Cedar, and that they are to meet her in her laboratory in Oborough City. Packing up, both the mother and the player character take the Ninjask Express Train to Oborough City, where the good Professor welcomes you. She allows for the selection of one of three Pokémon to which she gives out to her assistants: Grass-Type Ivyern, Fire-Type Fuegato and Water-Type Splashade. After picking one, she introduces you to the other two applicants, Theo, who picks the starter weak to the one you picked, and either Hailey (if the player is male) or Oscar (if the player is female) who has the starter that has a type advantage.
After this meeting, the three new assistants bid farewell to their parents as they start their journey to collect information on Pokémon via the Pokédex, which they are given. After this, the player battles with their two new rivals. The Professor notices you and your rival's skill for battling and recommends that you three also apply for the Pokémon League. She points to the city with the nearest gym, which is Trumpera City to the west. The player sets off to challenge the gym leader there, entering through the gates of Route 1 to begin their journey.
