Paper Mario: Countdown to Chaos is the 5th installment to the Paper Mario series, after Sticker Star, and is set in the time period straight after the events of Super Paper Mario.

The game's plot revolves around Mario who must collect together the Chrome Stars which have been scattered around different Time Periods, in order to keep the Grande Star Clock, the keeper of time in the Mushroom World, from stopping, effectively making time stand still for eternity. These events have been caused by an unkown force at first and Mario investigates what, or exactly, who caused this.

Prologue: No Time Like The Past []

The Title Screen

Mario is invited to Moonview City to try out famed Chronologist, Professor Koopenstein's newest innovation: A Time Machine. However, after a successful trial run with the Professor's Assistant, Goombeverly, all the stars on the Moonview City Clock-Tower fade to gray and all the clocks in the Mushroom Kingdom turn to the 12 o'clock position and start counting backwards.

After investigating, Professor Koopenstein find out that the Chrome Stars, power sources to the Grande Star Clock in the T-Dimension have been scattered in the past, and without them, the Grande Star Clock, which keeps time in the Mushroom Universe, will stop, taking time with it and as such, leaving the universe trapped within the hour of its doom for eternity, and that the Clock-Tower in Moonview City is a parallel to the Grande Star Clock itself, which is where Mario can go to travel to the Grande Star Clock and return the Chrome Stars. Mario, with Goombeverly and Dr. Booston, the sponsor of the Time Machine's progress, travel to the past to acquire the Red Chrome Star, which is revealed to be 650 years in the past, before the Mushroom Kingdom's existence.

Chapter 1: The Great Beanbean Invasion []

Chapter 1 CTC

Mario and his partners end up in the Central Plains, surrounded by Four Territories: The Goomba Kingdom, the Toad Republic, the Boo Princedom and the Koopa Kingdom, as explained by Goombeverly. The group soon end up being ambushed and brought before King Koopo, who thinks of them as intruders. However, words comes around that a Beanbean invasion is coming from the southwest, and that the only way to counter this is to unite with the other three nations. Mario is assigned with Koopert to warn the other nations and propose an alliance. After warning them, with the help of the Boo, Goomba, Koopa and Toad soldiers, the invasion is held back. Mario encounters the King Bean, who he defeats, retreating immediately back to the Beanbean Kingdom. King Koopo orders Koopert to stay with Mario to help get the Chrome Stars back, and he and the other three leaders of the nations decide to keep their alliance, setting up the foundations for the making of the modern Mushroom Kingdom. After searching the rest of the Central Plains, Mario finds the Red Chrome Star.

After returning to the present, Mario returns the Red Chrome Star and finds out the location of the next Chrome Star: The Whirled West, about 140 years in the past. After exploring the Bowser Badlands and gaining some more fuel for the Time Machine, Mario heads forth to the next location, unaware that someone is following him. Meanwhile, Princess Peach and Luigi hear of Mario's quest, and decide to help him by travelling to the Beanbean Kingdom to get some information from Professor Koopentein's colleague, Dr. Beanston and Professor E. Gadd who is working with Dr. Beanston in his laboratory in Stardust Fields.

Chapter 2: Plains, Trains & Pains[]

Chapter 2 CTC

Mario and company end up in Shyville, and learn that a mysterious object crashed into the Whirled West Canyon recently. Upon leaving town, the group are robbed by a Bandit. Sheriff Shyler and Deputy Sheriff Shyres arrive at the scene, check if Mario and his partner are okay and rush off to capture the criminal. Mario follows, and after a dead end, he heads back and is ambushed by the same Bandit, who he defeats. Shyler locks up the criminal, and when Goombeverly asks if they have seen the Chrome Star anywhere, he brings out the Orange Chrome Star, and is happy to give it to Mario since he beat the Bandit. However, upon giving to Mario, the cell holding the notorious criminal gang, The Bandits Three bursts open, and the group steal the Chrome Star off Mario's hands. Shyler joins as a member of the party to work with Mario in capturing the thieves. Mario, with Shyler's abiility to shoot background objects, gets farther in the Whirled West canyon and captures two of the gang, and upon return, their leader, Banderson reveals himself, and after a failed escape, attack Mario and are defeated. In attempt to flee, the three hijack a Choomba Train. Mario pursues, and is successful in capturing them once and for all. Loving the adventures with Mario, Shyler pledges to join Mario on his quest, and the Orange Chrome Star is acquired.

Meanwhile, when Peach & Luigi arrive in Dr. Beanston's lab, they learn that the events of recent have not been an accident, due to the fact that the Stars can only be released from the Grande Star Clock manually, and it takes a lot of knowledge of the clock's mechanisms to do so. The duo return to give this information to Mario, who finds out that the next Chrome Star is located in the Parchedment Sands.

Chapter 3: Sands of Time []

Chapter 3

Upon arrival in the Parchedment Sands, the group head off to look for the Yellow Chrome Star. After a while, the group arrive in a town named Bomankh, inhabited mostly by Bob-Ombs. After wandering through the city, the group end up at the banks of the Line River, where they find Gaoway, a Gao whose job it is to keep the Guardian Statues of the Parchedment Kingdom content by feeding them knowledge in the form of scrolls annually. He had already fed the Rex and the Yoshi Sphinxes, but he has not found any scrolls for the most important guardian statue; the Sphinkoopa, who needs seven scrolls to be contented. He says the the scrolls can be found everywhere, and that Mario can find the scrolls around Bomankh and the desert. If not, the Parchedment Kingdom will be swallowed by the sands and disappear forever. Asking the other two Sphinxes will result in clues to the scroll whereabouts, and from asking the Rex Sphinx, Mario finds out that two townspeople in Bomankh are in possession of scrolls, and from the gossiping townspeople, Mario locates these townspeople and gets the first two scrolls. After that, Mario finds a Bob-Omb getting attacked by Anuboos. After saving the poor Bob-Omb, he finds himself a new party member, Tutankaboom, who gives him another scroll. With Tutankaboom's exploding ability, the group access the Yoshi Sphinx, who gives more riddles to the location of three other scrolls in the desert and Bomankh. After finding these scrolls, Mario only needs one more scroll, which he wins in a Quiz-off in Bomankh. After offering all the seven scrolls to the Sphinkoopa, it comes alive, attacking Mario. After calming the statue, the Yellow Chrome Star appears, which seemed to have enraged the statue, and Mario receives it, with three Chrome Stars in his possession now.

At Moonview City, Luigi & Peach arrive to tell Mario of their findings, which means that there is a villain behind all the events. Afterward, Luigi and Peach will leave, with Luigi heading off to study more with Dr. Beanston & E. Gadd, and Peach returning to her castle. After some more exploration of the Bowser Badlands and the Moonview Sewers, Mario learns that the Green Chrome Star has been scattered to the city of Koopmandu, 70 years in the past. The shadow that has been following Mario since the he returned from the Central Plains is soon revealed to be Midnight Guy, who is surprised by Luigi & Peach's findings and and runs off-screen to ponder about this new information.

Chapter 4: The Legend in the Sky []

Chapter 4

Mario and co. arrive in Koopmandu, a city at the base of the world's tallest Mountain, Mt. Cleverest. Asking the townsfolk of the Chrome Star's location ends up fruitless, but general words point to Master Pi, the wisest person in the region. Unfortunately, he lives in his temple above the clouds, and the only way of reaching him is by traversing Mt. Cleverest. Setting out, he meets a Monty Mole called Marty Mole who is also trying to scale the mountain, and asks Mario to find his backpack which he has lost in the city. After finding it in the Toad House, he returns it to Marty and in gratitude, he joins the party in their ascent of the mountain. With Marty's digging ability, the group, although with difficulty, manage to reach the cloudy path to the temple by traversing the dark caves and windy cliffs of Mt. Cleverest. However, upon meeting Master Pi, it seems as if he has amnesia, and thus Mario has to return to Koopmandu from a Pipe which leads to a new area, where he meets Piona, Master Pi's granddaughter, who says she might be able to help. After taking her up to the Temple, she suggests that a Mind Herb may help, and after puzzle-solving, Mario acquires one from the temple vault. After refreshing the Master's mind, he says that he saw something crash on the summit, and gives Mario a rope to access it, asking that he say hello to Skytail, a dragon who is thought to be a myth. Upon reaching the summit, Mario is attacked by Skytail, who seems to be in a rampage. After calming him down, Mario finds out that the Chrome Star landed on Skytail's head during his nap, which is why he was on a rampage. Skytail gladly gives Mario the Star and one of his scales. The group has now four Chrome Stars.

Meanwhile, at Peach's Castle, Bowser is looking in, trying to kidnap the Princess again. Peach escapes his grasp by a secret escape route, but is soon captured by Bowser's minions outside. On the way to his own castle, the Koopa Cruiser is hijacked by a mysterious force, and explodes, sending Bowser and Princess all across the Kingdom. In the Beanbean Kingdom, Luigi is still researching the Grande Star Clock with Beanston and Gadd, and finds out something striking regarding its history. Afterwards, in another cutscene, a voice off-screen commands a Doogan and a Top-Hat wearing Puppeteer to hunt Mario down and take him out of the way, saying that he is becoming too much of a threat. Mario and co. explore more of Moonview City and eventually find some Chronocrystals after a chain of quests, and are told that their next destination is in the Village of Eternal Night; Crescent Shade Village, 50 years into the past.

Chapter 5: A Crescent Shaded Tale[]

Chapter 5

Mario & co arrive in the serene Crescent Shade Village. Exploring the village, there is no sign of the Chrome Star and the townsfolk have no information. It is revealed that the innkeeper, Zerge holds the Chrome Star and will trade it to Mario if he helps find his missing daughters in the Weeping Woods. There, Mario is ambushed by Katja, who was sent to assassinate him. After defeating her, Mario finds the twins and saves Katja from danger, acquiring her as his newest partner, as the Doogan is grateful for his selflessness. Returning to the village, the townsfolk have become rude and unkind, including Zerge, who dismisses Mario and his daughters, saying that they are mistaken. Katja speculates it is the work of Paperteer, her partner-in-crime, as he can control people with his puppet strings. After gaining a lead to his whereabouts, Mario uses a secret tunnel underneath the fountain and get access to the Crescent Shade Manor, after some Mine Cart Madness in the tunnel itself. Upon confronting Paperteer, he mocks Katja for her betrayal and attacks. Soon, after a tricky battle, Paperteer is defeated and retreats, using a time capsule similar to the one Katja used to get into the past. The townsfolk return to normal, and Zerge is reunited with his daughters and gives Mario the Turquoise Chrome Star, bringing the total of Stars up to 5.

Mario returns to the present and learns from Prof. Koopenstein that his next destination is 120 years into the past, in Frost Hill where the Ledus-Heliogon War wiped out both of their species. After exploring more of the Bowser Badlands, he finds the Chronocrystals needed and heads off to find the next Chrome Star. Meanwhile, Bowser has landed in the city of Sunsee, the sister city of Moonview. While all the citizens hide for their lives, Bowser heads off to get back to his castle, resulting in a platforming stage parodying Super Mario Bros. Peach, however, lands in Moonview City and after walking around searching for Mario, she bumps into Luigi, who has returned from the BeanBean Kingdom to alert Mario of his important findings. Together, they head off to find Mario, not knowing that Midnight Guy is following them.

Chapter 6: A Scorching Skirmish in the Snowfields[]

Chapter 6

Upon arrival, the group is surrounded by a whole army of Ledusi, who are threatened by their presence. Commander Ziema of the army asks what is the party's business there, and after an explanation is still suspicious, putting the group under scrutiny from the guards. Goombeverly comments that this must be the last group of the militaristic Ledusi species. After being told by the lighthouse keeper that there might be something near Mt. Blanket, Mario goes, only to reach a dead end at Snowflake Lake. When Mario sees two Ledusi soldiers getting attacked by Heliogons (which the Ledusi accidentally provoked with their artillery practice) and saves them. One of them, Sgt. Sniegs joins Mario as his 8th partner. With his freezing ability, Mario crosses Snowflake Lake on ice. Arriving at the other side, known as Frost Hill, mario reaches the base of Mt. Blanket and heads into the tunnels below it, which are hot and volcanic. Soon the group reaches an underground city of Heliogons built on top of a plateau surrounded by Lava. The group sees the Cyan Chrome Star on a pedestal, and after some lava platform hopping, they get confronted by Emperor Ruppt, who attacks. Once defeated, Mario explains to the Emperor that his intentions are not malign and he is not trying to wipe out the Heliogon species, which are paranoid at the subject of their survival, which is why Heliogon scouts were sent. After this misunderstanding, the Heliogons and Ledusi make peace and vow to support each other to rebuild their species. With this, Emperor Ruppt and Commander Ziema honorably give Mario his 6th Chrome Star.

Upon returning, Mario is greeted by Peach and Luigi, who tell him of how the Grande Star Clock was created by the Tribe of Time to help keep time itself stable. The Tribe of Time weaves the Fabric of Time so that it may flow. Luigi suspects that the person behind all this must have been a person from the tribe, for only they have enough knowledge of the clock to sabotage it. After this, Midnight Guy reveals himself and says that he is an investigator to the Grande Star Clock, saying that this information has solved the enigma behind the it, and knows who is responsible. However, before he can say so, three strange shadows carry him, Luigi and Peach away into the shadows. Before he is swallowed into the shadows Midnight Guy tosses a key to Mario, saying that it will help him greatly soon, and that it was passed down from his ancestors. After this, Mario learns from Prof. Koopenstein that the energies of the Grande Star Clock have begun to go out of control, and that Mario must hurry up to find the remaining two Chrome Stars. Mario finds some Chronocrystals in the Moonview Sewers thanks to Sniegs' freezing ability and travels to his next destination: The Piranhipine Islands, 500 years into the past! Upon getting into the Time Machine however, it blacks out like it was sabotaged, and while Mario is transported to the correct time period, the location has changed...

Chapter 7: Sailing the Seventh Sea[]

Chapter7CTC

Mario and company arrive in the coastal city of Portugoom instead, which is right in the other side of the world from their intended destination. At this period in time, the Piranhipine Islands have not yet been discovered, so no person can take Mario there. Upon meeting Ferdinand and Luis, Flavio's ancestors, and helping them find their lost item, the brothers agree to help Mario get to the unknown land across the Seventh Sea and discover this new land. The voyage takes place over days, and the group fight off sea creatures as well as a pirate invasion lead by Captain Splashbeard and take a break stop on an uncharted island, continuing after the supplies have been replenished. Upon the sighting of land the next day, the group have arrived at the Piranhipine Islands and are ready to dock at the beach, until the group is attacked by a hostile Whirly Blooper. Upon arrival at the islands, Mario goes into the jungle and finds the 7th Chrome Star in a clearing.

When Mario returns to the present, the countdown to the world's end has sped up and time seems to be getting more unstable, prompting the group to hurry up. The news worsens when Professor Koopenstein says that he cannot track the 8th Chrome Star anywhere, as it is in a place out of time. The group comes to the conclusion that it must be in the T-Dimension as it is outside of time. The group finish up their errands around town and embark to get the 8th Chrome Star in the center of action.

Chapter 8: Countdown to Chaos[]

Chapter8CTC

Mario arrives at the T-Dimension, which is seemingly deserted. When he goes into the library, he meets Tolle, the guardian of the library who says that the others have been locked up by Cron, a traitor to their tribe, in the Chronos Castle. Because the Tribe cannot weave the Fabric of Time locked away, the Mushroom World's time has been unstable. Mario goes into the Chronos Castle to save the others, and after a rematch with the Paperteer, they save everyone, although the leader, Tocca is still missing. Mario goes back into the Chronos Castle and into its basement where Cron's mastermind plan was formulated in secret. Here, the group is ambushed by the Shades, a trio of mercenaries loyal to Cron, who sabotaged the Time Machine prior to Chapter 7 and kidnapped Peach, Luigi and Midnight Guy. Upon defeating the Shades, he captured people are released as well as Tocca. With Tocca, the group can enter the Temple of Time where they find Cron. He shatters the Purple Chrome Star and battles, but is defeated. He tries to make his escape, but Tocca intervenes, and is fatally wounded in the process. Tocca uses his remaining energy as a sacrifice to restore the Purple Chrome Star. The group chase Cron, but he has taken over the Chronos Castle to use as a weapon, which he calls the Pendulum. His motive for all his schemes is that it will awaken the Lord of Time, Kronagera, who slept after creating the Tribe of Time and the T-Dimension itself. He should never awaken, as this will cause him to rampage, effectively destroying the Mushroom World as we know it. Cron explans that he hates the Mushroom World; they have forgotten the Tribe and its contribution to them and how without them nothing would happen. All the lack fo credit and neglect had made him hateful, and he vows to reset the timeline of the world so that everyone would once again know the sheer importantce of the Tribe's work, and he himself as well for creating the Clock to begin with. All seems useless until the Chrome Stars warp into the places of their landing where the wishes and hopes of all the people Mario's met and helped surge the Stars with power, in turn powering Mario and his partners up. The group defeat Cron and Pendulum after a heated battle, where Cron realizes all he's done wrong. Saying goodbye, he obliterates himself with magic as a sign of guilt and vanishes. The group celebrate Mario's victory as the credits roll.

After the game, Mario is called to the T-Dimension again. There, Tolle says that the Tribe has been rebuilding. However, there are still some Chrome Stars yet to be recovered and without them, the world's time is still at risk, even though it is much more stable now. If the missing 4 are not recovered, then Kronagera has the potential to awaken from his slumber. With this, Mario continues his journey to recover the last 4 Chrome Stars.

Gameplay[]

In terms of gameplay, Countdown to Chaos returns to the main mechanics of the first two installments of the series. Like in The Thousand Year Door', Mario starts the adventure with the ability to use action commands, and gains the Hammer in the prologue, like in the original Paper Mario. Mario regains the ability to Spin Dash from the original as well.

The Partners system remains relatively unchanged from The Thousand Year Door, with Partners having their own health meter as well as having the ability to have status inflicted on them. Most of the partners have similarities to past partners, like Goombeverly to Goombella, but there are more abilities available in the field as well as partners having the ability to gain an extra move through the equipping of a badge. The battle system also remains relatively unchanged, and the characters can interact with the stage and audience. The audience is more varied than in The Thousand Year Door however, as each location has a different pool of audience members to choose from. For example, a battle in the Whirled West Canyon may have Cowboy Shy Guys and Bandits, which are exclusive to the area.

Paper Abilities[]

Like in The Thousand Year Door, Mario gains Paper abilities throughout the game. Instead of being cursed by Black Chest Demons however, Mario gains these abilities during the interludes where he gains them through the training of Merlon. When Mario first encounters a trigger for these abilities in the overworld, Merlon appears and explains them, training Mario on how to use these abilities. All the abilities from The Thousand Year Door return; Plane Mode has Mario turning into a paper plane to glide across large gaps, Paper Mode allows Mario to turn sideways and get through thin gaps, Tube Mode allows Mario to roll himself up and go through low passages, and Boat Mode where Mario can turn himself into a paper boat on certain docks to travel across water. Spring Mode is a new mode where Mario can turn himself into a Paper Spring when on a spring panel to jump to great heights.

Background[]

Returning from The Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario is the ability to get into the background to get to items as well as buildings which can only be accessed from the background scenery. Unlike The Thousand Year Door, Mario can use his partners in the background. He cannot move into a different screen or area from the background, however. Interacting with background scenery also affects the foreground. For example, freezing a waterfall with Sgt. Sniegs in the background will also freeze the river in the foreground.

Intermissions[]

Intermissions return from the first two installments. First, there is usually a flashback concerning the Tribe of Time and its interactions, followed by a segment featuring Peach, Luigi and Midnight Guy. All the characters can be controlled as well as be switched to use each other's abilities. Peach can glide, Luigi can jump high and Midnight Guy can use stealth to get past hazards. In combat, the player can use all three in battle at once and use their abilities to attack. Should any of them fall in battle, it will result in a Game Over. Their segments can be replayed again if Mario interacts with the Time Tome in the Library in the T-Dimension. The Peach, Luigi and Midnight Guy intermissions are to find out information about the Tribe of Time, the events following and to help Mario.

Mario's Partners[]

Throughout the game, Mario, just like the first two installments, has partners. His partners have purposes in both the overworld and battle. They can be upgraded by Abili T. by giving him 3 Shine Sprites. Every partner knows two moves upon joining the party, learns the third after being upgraded to Super Rank, and masters the final move after attaining Ultra Rank. A 5th move may be added through the use of a badge which can be won by clearing the trials set for each specific partner by a mysterious character after Chapter 7.

Kind, patient and gentle, she will only fight if she has to, which shows in her moves being mostly support and defense-based than offensive.

After collecting pieces of sheet music from all over the place; past and present, which Mario gives to him, the song is an instant hit and as thanks, he tags along, helping Mario on his way.

In the overworld he can lull enemies to sleep, break glass with sound and activate sound switches.

Once Mario has completed those sidequests, he will be awarded Chomptron to use as a partner. In the field, Mario can ride it for fast transport and jumping over wide gaps or over fences.

In battle, he has no HP bar. Instead, he has an energy bar which goes down each turn. Once it runs out, he must be recharged (by using the Recharger after battle) and Mario will have to switch his partner during battle. Powerful hits from enemies make the HP bar go down faster, but he can recover energy if Mario uses a Volt Shroom on it. Chomptron cannot use items or use Star Power attacks. Its attacks do not consume FP, but instead energy.

Crunch
0 Energy
Bites one enemy
Charge

Itemize

Items[]

Badges[]

Badges are items which Mario may equip to gain an effect on himself or his partners, and can be bought from Soupy's stand at the Marty Mall, Stocc the Salesman, traded in for star pieces from Merline, won at the Marty Mall casino, stolen from an enemy in battle or found in blocks across the world. The blocks that contain badges are red, rather than yellow.

When Mario levels up, he may choose to increase his Badge Points (BP) which allow the use of badges. The more BP he has, the more badges he can equip. Stronger, more useful badges require more BP to equip while badges that change aesthetics usually require none, like the L Emblem or the Attack FX Badges.

Badge effects vary depending on the badge; they can add attack moves to Mario and his partners, increase the amount of coins after a battle, change action command times, refund used items and many more. The L Emblem and the W Emblem change Mario's clothing to Luigi's and Wario's, respectively, while putting them both on at once will give Mario Waluigi's clothing. The Fire Emblem changes Mario's clothing to that of his Fire powerup, and can be used with the other Emblems as well.

Badge effects can be stacked by equipping more of one badge; the damage output will increase but so will the FP requirements for the moves.

Mystical Paintings[]

Mystical Paintings are pieces of artwork created by Vincent Can Goom, a legendary painter who used the powder of dimensions in his paint. With a special charm and Arh T.'s knowledge of the powder of dimensions, these paintings can be entered and transport an individual to the place where the painting was created, much like a portal. These locations do exist in the Mushroom World and thus are in the present. These areas all have an exclusive optional mini-boss that may be fought for its rare drops as well as the shops which sell exclusive and very rare items. The Mini-Bosses can be fought at any time and also be repeated. Defeating one of these Mini-Bosses gains Mario a special artifact upon their first defeat. Collecting all the artifacts by defeating all these Mini-Bosses gains Mario the Supernova Badge from the Moonview City Museum owner as well as access to an unlimited supply of rare cooking ingredients in the museum's vault.

Pit of 100 Trials[]

Like in the previous installments to Paper Mario, there is an optional challenge in the form of the Pit of 100 Trials. In the game, there are actually two pits; one in the main city, Moonview, and the other in its sister city, Sunsee. The Sunsee Pit may only be accessed after beating the 12th Chapter and after beating the Moonview Pit. Inside the Pit are enemies, which get progressively stronger. In the Moonview Pit, the last room contains Terratail, who is related to Skytail, as the boss of the dungeon. Beating him gets Mario the Return Postage Badge. In addition, the Sunsee Pit's boss is Oceantail, and beating her gets Mario the Nova Hammer & Nova Jump Badges.
